PL 26/10: Course design

Filed under: LATINA — plinius @ 10:09 am

Courses are built, not born. They are constructed entities.

The way we construct a course, is a matter of design. To design means to create under constraint. A good design shows grace under pressure.

To design a car is to plan a new production process. To design a new course is to plan a new learning process. To conduct a new course is to manage a new learning process.

LATINA

Below I have tried to identify the main building blocks (modules) of the five LATINA courses we have conducted till now:

  1. Using blogs as learning platforms
    • interaction design
    • aggregators
  2. Using Google Documents as a shared work space
    • docs
    • presentations
    • spreadsheets
    • forms
  3. Develop visual communication skills

    • making educational photo productions
    • making educational video productions
  4. Using a variety of teaching formats – for instance
    • mini-lectures
    • visual slide shows
    • Pecha Kucha
    • digital stories
    • triggers
  5. Designing multilingual learning processes – using
    • Wikipedia
    • Google Translate
  6. Doing evidence-based case work
    • course evaluation
    • traffic indicators
    • library indicators
    • web metrics (not yet)
    • research productivity (not yet)
  7. Discussing digital data flows – related to
    • data capture
    • data processing
    • combining data flows (mash-ups)
    • data presentation
    • evidence-based practice
  8. Exploring classical models of learning, knowledge and change – like
    • Learning: Vygotsky, Freire, Bateson, Dewey (John)
    • Knowledge: Annales School (Braudel), Tavistock School (Bion), Donald Schön, Dreyfus & Dreyfus
    • Change: Kuhn, Habermas, Bourdieu, Foucault
  9. Exploring current authors and concepts – in the fields of learning, knowledge and change
    • Learning: Seely-Brown, Negroponte, Carr, Mott, Wesch
    • Knowledge: Reich (Robert), Florida, Friedman, Shirky
    • Change: Flyvbjerg, OER (OA, free), EBP (NPM, scientific management)
  10. Designing and conducting educational events
    • for the Summer School
    • within the LATINA class

Blogging, gmail and Google Docs constitute our basic learning platform.

Constraints

Our constraints are given by

  • time
  • space
  • technology
  • language
  • participant skills
  • teacher skills

Note

Ernest Hemingway said:

  • “Courage is grace under pressure.”
  • “Never mistake motion for action.”
  • “The shortest answer is doing the thing.”
