The Global Statistics project was – I gather – an IFLA-based initiative to reestablish library statistics as an area for data collection, publication and analysis within the Unesco system.
The first phase of the project was completed with a conference last year in Montreal. The IFLA Statistics and Evaluation Section is now applying for (and is likely to get) funding for a second phase.
Today we appointed a small committee (Colleen Cook/US, Antoni Feliu Coller/Spain, Tord Høivik/Norway – chair) to plan the work required this autumn. I volunteered for the task, since I have a long-standing interest in development statistics.
In this case, long means forty years – I first taught and investigated social statistics abroad while working at UNAM in Mexico City in 1969/70. It’s nice to be back.
We’ll have a meeting with Stuart Hamilton, IFLA’s strategic advisor, on Tuesday. There will probably be a small workshop in conjunction with the ISO library statistics meeting in Brussels in October. We hope the central persons from phase 1 – who now have leave the standing committee – will be present: Roswitha Poll, Michael Heaney and Pierre Mounier.
