PL 17/08: Students gather in Porto

In January 2009, the next BOBCATSSS conference will be arranged in Portugal.

The conference is organized by library students. As their web site shows, they are getting more sophisticated year by year.

I hope to go - and have submitted a workshop proposal, which is registered as paper no. 76. Plugging for LATINA in 2009 is also part of the plan. Top secret, of course.

Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik are the three main cities on the Dalmatian coast.

I remember Dubrovnik from the ’seventies, when I went to a summer course at the Inter-University Center, with Habermas as one of the lecturers.

PL 1/08: Librarians in the knowledge economy

Introduction

The role of libraries, the content of librarianship and the professional identity of librarians are changing. Based on our experiences as a library student (Kari Frodesen) and a library teacher (Tord Høivik) at the main library school in Norway, we here try to describe and to explain what is happening – so that the profession can be better prepared for future change.

PL 38/07: The professional role of librarians

At the next BOBCATSSS conference in January I am codirecting - with Kari Frodesen - a workshop on the professional role of librarians in the knowledge society.

Librarianship represents second careers for both of us. Kari comes from business and I from peace research. We will draw on our experience as both in- and outsiders when we pose (we hope) some challenging questions about professional identities and collective strategies in the library field.

The venue is Zadar, on the Dalmatian coast. The BOBCATSSS organizers in Croatia have set up a very impressive web site for the 2008 conference. The workshop description is included in the published program.
