In its recent newsletter, the IFLA Statistics and evaluation section presents an interesting set of data on metropolitan libraries, from the year 2006.

Thirteen library systems serve a population of more than one million:
- Hong Kong 6.990 thousand inhabitants
- Singapore 4.480
- New York City 3.310
- Brooklyn 2.500
- Toronto 2.500
- Queens 2.230
- Paris 2.130
- Bucharest 1.930
- Budapest 1.70
- Vienna 1.660
- Montreal 1.620
- Barcelona 1.610
- Prague 1.190
- Note: rounded to three significant digits
For these thirteen “cities”, I give the median values of some indicators (2006):
- The number of registered users as a percentage of the population: 31 percent
- The number of new users as a percentage of the total number of users: 17 percent
- The number of library visits per inhabitant: 3,7
- The number of library visits per user: 11,7
- The number of virtual visits per 100 physical vists: 34 (based on ten libraries)
